2012 ‘Read to Succeed’ Registration Now Open for K-6 Teachers and Students

Six Flags Great Adventure and Discovery Education are partnering together to offer free admission to the New Jersey theme park for K-6 students who participate in Read to Succeed, an online program geared to encourage students to read outside of the classroom.

Students who complete six hours of non-school-related reading, such as picture books, newspapers, comic books, novels and nonfiction materials, are eligible to earn a free admission ticket. Teachers with 10 or more students who participate in and complete the program are also eligible to earn a free ticket. Read to Succeed registration is now open for all schools online at http://discoveryeducation.com/readtosucceed.

“Last year, 1,600 schools and nearly 110,000 students throughout the tri-state area participated in this program,” said Park President John Fitzgerald. “We aim to increase participation in 2012 by encouraging more teachers to register their classrooms and help foster a passion for reading among today’s students.”

Discovery Education packs the Read to Succeed website full of classroom and at-home resources which focus on extending that passion beyond the classroom. Suggested reading lists combined with puzzles, lesson plans and multimedia resources help increase student engagement as the books’ themes and concepts spring to life. At home, parents can extend learning with activities that incorporate and build upon classroom reading themes.

The registration deadline is March 1. Teachers are highly encouraged to register as soon as possible to provide their students with enough time to complete the required six hours of reading. To help teachers better understand the new features and updates to the Read to Succeed program, including how to register and submit student reading hours, a free webinar is available online January 10 at http://readtosucceed.discoveryeducation.com/. Archived information is also available at any time.

For more information or to register for the Read to Succeed program, visit http://discoveryeducation.com/readtosucceed.

Six Flags Wild Safari, the largest drive-thru safari outside of Africa, introduces two rare European brown bear cubs. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the overall brown bear species of least concern. However, the European subspecies no longer exists in the wild throughout England and Ireland; and though originally found in large populations throughout Britain, can only be found in small populations throughout parts of Northern Europe. The Six Flags Wild Safari staff is proud to welcome the threatened species of newborns to the park’s previous population of 26 European brown bears.

The cubs were born in the Bear Country of the safari and became separated from their mother due to winter weather conditions. The newborns, which are born blind and hairless, were quickly relocated to an indoor nursery where they could be cared for by the Wild Safari veterinary staff. The European brown bear cubs will remain in the care of our animal staff for approximately two years until the cubs can care for themselves and be mixed back into the Bear Country. Six Flags visitors can see the cubs playing in their water hole, wrestling and lounging around in the new Safari Discoveries interactive animal exhibit inside the theme park beginning this spring.

“These births are very significant for the Wild Safari and the endangered animal populations,” said Dr. William Rives, Director of the safari park and exotic animal expert of 19 years. “We are very excited to have these healthy newborns join our safari.”

The all-new Safari Discoveries will be located in The Golden Kingdom section of the theme park and will offer a glimpse into the world of exotic animals. Guests will get a little wild this season with up-close animal encounters including a California sea lion exhibit complete with an underwater viewing pool; a walk-thru aviary – Parakeet Paradise; the Wild Safari nursery featuring the newborn European brown bears; and our “Please Touch” ambassadors showcasing animals such as a spotted skunk, giant Flemish rabbit, hedgehogs, snakes and more.

Six Flags Great Adventure & Wild Safari is dedicated to providing a one-of-a-kind safari experience where guests can get up-close to rare and exotic animals from around the globe allowing them to understand the importance for humans and wildlife to have sustainable environmental interactions.

Park guests can see the newborn European brown bear additions, check out the all-new Safari Discoveries and visit more than 1,200 other Wild Safari residents beginning April 9. The Wild Safari is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. any theme park operating day except Fridays during Fright Fest. For more information on Six Flags Great Adventure & Wild Safari guests can call 732/928-1821 or visit the web at sixflags.com.

The gestation period of a giraffe, the tallest, land-living animal species, lasts between 14-15 months, and gives birth standing up. The mother giraffe Georgia gave birth to her six-foot, 100-pound newborn in a private barn in the Wild Safari. The veterinarian staff conducted a 24 hour “baby exam” and both mother and calf are doing well. “Provided that the mother and baby are flourishing, we try to maintain a hands-off approach and allow nature to take its course, as there is nothing better for the baby than mom’s attention and her milk,” said Dr. William Rives, a Six Flags Wild Safari exotic animal expert for 20 years.

“We are proud of Georgia, she is a good mother and is doing an excellent job raising her newborn, which is not always the case,” stated Rives, who with the assistance from George Stout, Manager at the Wild Safari, hand-raised Georgia when she was born in 1993. “Sometimes inexperienced mothers become overwhelmed and abandon their calves, so we had to intervene to keep Georgia healthy,” said Rives. “She is now one of our most outgoing giraffes and it’s really exciting to see her as a mother.”

The Wild Safari also welcomed three African lion cubs in December. The one male and two female cubs were born to mother Queen and father King. Visitors can see the new babies and experience Six Flags’ unique 4.5 mile drive-thru Wild Safari on select days beginning April 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wild Safari’s Winter Vacation

Where do the animals go in the winter…they stay right here in Jackson, N.J. While Six Flags Wild Safari is open seasonally April through November to the general public, the 1,200 animals live year-round at the wildlife preserve and settle in to New Jersey’s dynamic four-season environment to remain comfortable in the winter. The Safari staff facilitates this unique transition by stocking the 350-acre wildlife preserve with food and supplies, preparing for the upcoming chilly months.

Many of the residents in the Safari are cold climate descendants and are familiar with the change in climate such as black bear, Siberian Tigers, various hoof stock and others. The Wild Safari also includes a variety of exotic animals that are typically accustomed to a dry climate including giraffes, elephants, zebras, white rhinos, lions and several antelope species. To make these animals feel at home, Six Flags provides access to heated barns during the cold season. These areas are individually regulated according to each species, which are free to roam between grazing paddocks and the heated barns throughout the winter. Also, no matter the weather, the Wild Safari staff must visit each of the more than 35 buildings every day to bring food, water and clean up.

In winter months, food consumption is increased by 50 percent. Wild Safari staff anticipates this dietary change and will stock hay barns, grain silos and supply sheds to ensure animals will have enough feed and proper care for approximately two months at a time. This stock pile allows wardens to keep excellent care and nutritional balance of the animals regardless of delivery delays resulting from inclement weather such as snow fall. This extra food helps sustain core body temperature and aids in the growth of thicker winter coats. Six Flags animal staff will provide up to 80 tons of hay and 50 tons of grain in a typical winter month.

“Growing thicker winter coats and bulking up fatty layers in the fall assists animals with insulation in the colder months,” stated Dr. Rives. “Most of the animals in the Wild Safari were born on property and are descendants of the original 1974 herds. Animals are amazing in their ability to adapt to diverse environments and our Safari residents have acclimated to the changing seasons quite well.”

Six Flags Wild Safari features more than 1,200 animals representing 52 species spanning six continents. Guests can enjoy unlimited visits to Six Flags Great Adventure and Wild Safari with a 2011 Season Pass available online.
Standing 154 feet tall and reaching speeds of 63 mph, GREEN LANTERN will rank among the tallest and fastest roller coasters of its kind anywhere in the world. Unlike traditional seated coasters,
GREEN LANTERN is designed to allow passengers to stand throughout the entire course of the ride that delivers an experience unlike any other. The two minute and thirty second thrill begins with a pulse-quickening 45-degree vertical drop before rocketing riders through five inversions – including a 121-foot-tall loop, a 103-foot dive loop, a 72-foot inclined loop and twisted double corkscrews.

Guardians of peace and justice, the GREEN LANTERN CORPS is a group of intergalactic police officers charged with the protection of the universe. A GREEN LANTERN must be someone who has the ability and willpower to overcome great fear. Recognized as the greatest member of the GREEN LANTERN CORPS, HAL JORDAN was the first Earthman ever inducted into the Corps. and also became a founding member of the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA. Green Lanterns are outfitted with a weapon unlike any other in existence, a ring that channels pure willpower in the form of solid green energy that can manifest any construct the bearer imagines. First published by DC Comics in 1941, GREEN LANTERN currently appears in over 100 comic books distributed worldwide annually. GREEN LANTERN has also appeared in Warner Bros. animation, home videos, interactive games and will star in his first feature film, “Green Lantern,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, slated for release on June 17, 2011.

“Six Flags is home to many of the biggest roller coasters in the world and GREEN LANTERN brings an all new dimension of thrills. Built by B&M (Bolliger & Mabillard) the design wizards behind Nitro, BIZARRO, SUPERMAN-Ultimate Flight and BATMAN the Ride, GREEN LANTERN is guaranteed to deliver a smooth, white-knuckled adventure – but this time standing up while upside down,” said John Fitzgerald, park president.

GREEN LANTERN is the perfect addition to the park’s unique coaster collection and will join 12 other adrenaline-pumping coasters at Six Flags Great Adventure, including the tallest, fastest coaster in the world, Kingda Ka; the monstrous wooden coaster El Toro; and mega coaster Nitro. The new coaster is slated to debut Spring 2011 in the Boardwalk section of the park.
